When can you push accessories too hard?

Many people know you have to push to a certain threshold or close proximity to failure to introduce the stimulus required for muscle growth.

This puts you in a tricky position: you’re training to progress and increase tonnage for growth, but when you push to a certain point to achieve increases in weight, reps etc. your form breaks down.

Form breaking down generally means you’re directing stimulus away from target muscles.

Consciously fight this urge to make it easier (by altering technique or using momentum) even if it makes it harder to progress the weight or reps.

Keep in mind this doesn’t mean you’re progressing slower just because changes on paper are smaller.

Hitting the target muscle with enough stimulus to grow is the goal. Numbers do not always determine this.

Working the lat is the goal when it comes to using

Working the lat is the goal when it comes to using the lat pulldown.

Yes there are many ways to perform the movement and work different muscle groups but it is generally going to be a good idea to work the muscle the machine is intended for - the lats.

Technique Breakdown:

▪️Grip: Grab the bar shoulder-width apart. This grip allows for optimal lat engagement.

▪️Posture: Maintain a slight lean back, but keep it controlled. Avoid excessive leaning which can shift the focus away from your lats.

▪️Movement: As you pull down, allow for a slight elevation of the shoulders at the top. Keep your elbows close to your ribs to maximise lat isolation. Remember, it’s not just about pulling down; control the bar as you return to the starting position to really work those muscles.

Keeping as rigid as possible throughout the deadli

Keeping as rigid as possible throughout the deadlift will allow you to utilise your muscles more efficiently and lift more weight.

There are many cues that are pushed out there and most of them work well.

Experiment with different cues that work for you and adapt them to your liking or to the method that brings you the best result.

The goal here is to stay rigid throughout the rep. You can then adapt things from here to further increase efficiency, such as decreasing range of motion for example (more on this in another video).
