Having A ‘Why’ Behind Training

Do you have a ‘why’ behind your training? Everyone knows they should lose weight, get strong, get fit and achieve the goals they set out for themselves. The feeling of why someone wants to lose the weight or the vision they have of themselves when achieving their goal is what provides the energy to set off on achieving their goal. That feeling or vision is often forgotten or fades as time goes on. Time does this, bit by bit distractions, effort and usually set back all compounds and weigh up against the initial ‘feel good’ of achieving the goal.

Identifying the ‘why’, verbally or written allows us to remember the vision we once had at the start. At times of low faith or failure in pursuit of the goal, you are able to visually remind yourself of the importance of the goal.

Having A Significant ‘Why’

Training will eventually feel hard. It might take something small or large to put you off course. This can generally be just temporary, but for some, it might turn them off completely. You generally only need to be bumped back on track after slight deviations. However, there might be times where a lot more is required to get you back to the right state to continue training as normal again. This is why the significance of the why needs to be something that resonates with you on a deeper level. Have a proper sit down and really break down why you’ve decided to make a change and why it is so significant (or why it will be so significant) once you get there.

Visualisation

Visualisation is key when trying to pull a ‘why’ out of your mind. Getting into the right state is sometimes hard when planning out goals. This can sometimes be brought out by pain that you have experienced in the past from ‘lack’ of not being in your ideal situation. The opposite of your feeling of ‘lack’ is your why. We all want to feel good and everyone has different situations or experiences that help achieve this. It’s very hard to give practical advice when helping someone find their ‘why’, but there are certain things that might draw out emotion attached to certain goals.

Motivation

Motivation feels great and when you’re in a motivated state it’s easy to push hard in your training. You may even be tired or in pain and you still find that you are able to train hard as you are motivated. What happens when you no longer have that motivation? And the effort required to achieve your goals is pushing down on you, making you ask yourself ‘is it worth it?’ It’s important to realise that you won’t always be motivated or at least your motivation levels will fluctuate. This is why, the goal of knowing your ‘why’ is ensuring that you are inspired regardless of motivation. And you’re still able to do the work required to achieve your goals.

The Power Of Knowing Your Why

Never underestimate the power of knowing why you are wanting to achieve a goal. It’s not necessarily going to make you progress quickly. But it will allow you to keep hacking away at a goal in good and bad times. It keeps you on track when you deviate off and keep you in the game long term. This is generally needed when you’re trying to achieve something significant or hard. Have that conversation with yourself, or better yet, your coach and experience the difference with your training.
