The Mindset Behind Fast Weight Loss
Let me ask you something. What do the following headlines have in common?
“Follow these tips to lose weight in a week.”
“Drop weight fast with these scientific methods.”
“The diet you need to lose 6 kilos in three weeks!”
That’s right. Each promotes the idea of quick weight loss. Moreover, each of these headlines sounds interesting and gets a fair amount of attention from people. All of that hints at one huge issue: the mindset of losing weight fast.
So, let’s talk about it.
The Mindset of Losing Weight Fast
Diets, ‘revolutionary’ training programs, fat-burning pills, and other gimmicks are incredibly popular, and one reason is that each promises fast weight loss. Go to social media or do a quick Google search, and you’re bound to come across numerous gurus and ‘experts’ trying to sell you their unique approach to fast and effortless weight loss.
Ideas like the above gather attention because they rely on people’s impatience and desire for quick results. After all, who would want to work toward a goal for six months if they can achieve the same results in half or a third of the time? Short bursts of pain seem far more attractive than long, drawn-out discipline sessions. So, the average person often goes from one shiny tactic to the next, desperately seeking ‘the one’ to help them reach their goals.
Three Problems With Losing Weight Fast
-
It’s Not Sustainable
One of the most significant issues with fat weight loss is that you cannot sustain it. Can you shed many kilos quickly? Absolutely. You can go on many diets and use numerous training plans. But are most of these approaches sustainable? No.
Everyone can get motivated enough to follow a restrictive diet for a few weeks or months. But, at some point, the pressure becomes too great, and people give up. When looking for a plan that offers fast results, ask yourself, “Is this something I can sustain in the long run?” If the answer is no, move on to something better.
-
It Doesn’t Work
The second massive issue with fast weight loss is that it simply doesn’t work. It can bring you some immediate results, but the long-term effectiveness is much smaller than most people imagine, and it all circles back to the first issue: sustainability. Long-term results depend on long-term efforts. If you can’t sustain an approach, you can’t expect to achieve good results and maintain them down the road.
-
It’s Not Fair
The final issue with fast weight loss is that it simply isn’t fair. Physiological processes require specific periods to occur, which fully applies to weight loss. Your body needs time to break down fat, and rushing the process will only leave you deprived and with less muscle mass on your frame. Plus, if it took someone five years to put on 30 kilograms through poor nutrition, why should it be fair to lose it in five weeks of dieting?
What To Do Instead
People often waste years and a lot of money pursuing shiny approaches that promise fast results. But, in most cases, what works best is to focus on the basics and stay consistent. Meaning:
- Maintain a slight calorie deficit, aiming to lose no more than 0.5 to 1 per cent of your bodyweight weekly
- Eat plenty of protein to support your muscle tissue while dieting
- Get at least seven hours of sleep per night to promote fat-burning
- Practice resistance training three to four days per week, emphasizing heavy compound training
Hammer the basics, track your progress, and you will achieve much better results.
