Your Guide to Preparing for Your First Powerlifting Competition
Congratulations! You’ve decided to take the plunge and compete in your first powerlifting competition. This is an exciting step in your fitness journey, and we’re here to help you prepare for a memorable and successful experience. Whether you’re a seasoned lifter or new to the sport, preparation is crucial to ensure you perform at your best on competition day. Keep reading for some valuable tips and insights on how to prepare for your first powerlifting competition.
1. Get Familiar with Competition Commands
Before comp day, make sure you’re familiar with the competition commands. Each lift—squat, bench press, and deadlift—has specific commands that you must follow to execute your lifts successfully. Practise these commands during your training sessions in the lead-up to comp to ensure you’re comfortable and confident with them on the big day. See our video ‘Practising Powerlifting Comp Commands’.
2. Mimic Competition Standards
In the weeks leading up to the competition, shift your training focus towards practising the specific competition lifts. Incorporate variations of the squat, bench press, and deadlift that mimic competition standards e.g. practice pausing in the bench press in the lead-up to comp so that you don’t have issues with pausing on the day. This will help you refine your technique and build confidence in your form. See our video ‘Prepping Your Bench Press For Comp’.
3. Prepare Your Gym Bag
A well-packed gym bag is essential for competition day. Here are some items you shouldn’t forget:
– Lifting gear: Check the competition rules to see what’s allowed. This may include a lifting belt, knee sleeves/wraps, wrist wraps, and a soft suit if you’re competing in a sanctioned comp.
– Apparel: If you’re competing in a novice comp wear comfortable training clothes and shoes suitable for lifting. Bring extra sets of clothes to change into after comp.
– Food and hydration: Pack nutritious snacks with plenty of carbohydrates, water, and electrolyte-rich beverages to keep your energy levels up throughout the day. See our tips on nutrition for comp day.
– Accessories: Bring a towel, extra chalk, ammonia /smelling salts if you need them, and any personal items you may need, like a foam roller, resistance bands or lacrosse ball for activations and warm-ups.
4. Know the Rules
Take the time to familiarise yourself with the competition rules and regulations. Understand the criteria for a successful lift, as well as any specific requirements regarding equipment and attire. Being well-informed will help you avoid unnecessary surprises or disqualifications on competition day, saving you stress on the day.
5. Plan Your Warm-Up
Develop a structured warm-up routine for all 3 lifts that prepares your body for the demands of heavy lifting. Start with activation and mobility work before you begin warming up with the barbell. This can include glute activation exercises, lat activation, and core activation. Gradually increase the intensity and specificity of your warm-up sets to prime your body for maximum performance.
6. Prioritise Rest and Recovery
In the weeks and days leading up to the competition, ensure you’re getting adequate sleep and that you’re managing stress levels. Allow your body ample time to recover from training sessions. This will help optimise your strength and energy levels on competition day.
Preparing for your first powerlifting competition can be both thrilling and nerve-wracking. By following these essential tips, you’ll set yourself up for a successful and enjoyable experience.
