1. Set a Timeline for Your Next Goal
After a competition, it’s important to have something to work towards. Without a clear objective, training can feel aimless, leading to frustration and stagnation. To avoid this, set a timeline for your next competition or max-out session. Having a date in mind gives you structure and keeps you motivated to improve.
2. Identify Areas to Improve
Every competition is a learning experience. Take time to reflect on your performance and pinpoint areas that need work. Maybe your strength peaked, but your technique needs refining. Or perhaps you identified a specific weakness that held you back. Whatever it is, recognising these areas will help you train with purpose.
3. Continue Working with Your Coach
One of the biggest mistakes athletes make post-competition is taking a break from structured coaching. While rest is necessary, completely stepping away can lead to lost progress. A coach will:
- Give you direction – Helping you transition into your next training phase effectively.
- Hold you accountable – Ensuring you stay on track and don’t lose momentum.
- Program efficiently – Structuring your training in a way that promotes continued progress without burnout.
Without a clear plan, many lifters find themselves stagnating or struggling to regain their previous strength. Staying connected with your coach ensures you continue to develop and build on what you’ve already achieved.
4. Keep Moving Forward
The key to long-term success isn’t just what you do during competition prep—it’s how you manage the phases in between. Having a structured plan, setting new goals, and working with the right support system will keep you progressing year after year.
