Your Training Environment Matters
Most people blame a lack of time, discipline, or willpower for their shortcomings.
For example, if someone exercises for a while but gives up, they might conclude, “I guess I’m just not disciplined enough to get fit.”
At first glance, that seems like solid reasoning and an excellent way to own up to one’s shortcomings.
But what most people fail to consider is their environment and how it influences their motivation, behaviours, and effort.
So, let’s talk about your training environment and its fundamental role in your outcomes.
The Importance of a Good Training Environment
Have you ever walked into a gym where the strongest person could barely bench 60 kilos, and most trainees felt incredibly bored and uninterested?
If so, you probably remember feeling less motivated to push yourself. Why? Because you could probably surpass all of these people in a couple of months of serious training. Or maybe you were already better than everyone else and didn’t feel the urge to improve further.
Now, imagine visiting a hardcore strength gym where bench pressing 140 kilograms for reps is the norm. You’re no longer the big fish in the small pond but must instead work hard to be competitive and get noticed.
In addition to feeling much more motivated to train hard, you realize something:
The human body is capable of far more than you previously thought. What is stopping you from getting there if a dozen people can put together a 650+ kilogram total on the squat, bench press, and deadlift?
Seeing others accomplish something day after day is a great way to stay motivated and see better results in your training. The mind can be a huge asset, but you must learn how to leverage its power.
So, What Does All Of That Mean?
The main message here is that you must look at your surroundings and ask yourself, “Is my environment beneficial, and does it support me on my way to achieving my goals?” If yes, that’s great. But if the answer is no, you must look at your surroundings and find ways to improve them.
For example, let’s say you’re an aspiring powerlifter looking to become competitive. In that case, could you say with confidence that training at a commercial gym is a good idea? A place where people give you dirty looks for dropping the bar a bit too hard at the end of a heavy deadlift set?
Now, compare that reserved environment with a hardcore powerlifting gym, where everyone works hard, iron plates rattle all the time, and people aren’t afraid to set the barbell on the floor.
It sounds more appealing and likely to encourage you to work hard, doesn’t it?
Conclusion
Our surroundings play a crucial role in the mindset we carry, how motivated we are, and how much effort we put into objectives.
More importantly, our environment develops our beliefs about what we can achieve. Surround yourself with people who have achieved what you want, and you’re more likely to reach your objectives.
In contrast, being around uninspired people would make you less motivated to push yourself to your limits and be the best version of yourself.
